The Human Rights Issue
Mad Season 143 views
I got a few mails from people who disagreed with my posts on protests, saying it is a basic human right to be able to speak up and stand up against oppressors. Basically, the freedom of speech is of utmost importance because it embodies the very essence of being free and being human. Yeah the very essence of being human, to complain.
Before i carry on, i’ll just like to say that, no i am not ignorant, and im not indignant that ive been criticised for my views. I know that im not the only who has such a view. Remember December 2005, when New York City imposed a $1 million a day fine on striking NYC transit union. This strike had cost NYC $400m in revenue and would cost them a further $300m a day subsequent. Think about it, that much money could be used to feed a developing country and in some cases make up the GDP of a smaller one. Way to go NYC.
I am no proponent of Human Rights nor am I grossly opposed to it. Le me reiterate this to some of you, I am not an elitist (ok i lie, may be a bit) but i believe in meritocracy. As for my ‘protest’ article, I urge you you find pictures of it, you’ll find people smiling and giving the peace sign, like it is some sort of fashion statement. I believe and I’ll again say that half the people there probably wouldn’t know what they are truly protesting about, and like I said, most protestors demonstrate because well, they can. It is a right to do so, just like it is a right to stop the economy from working properly then blaming the government for it later.
Those who have studied law or any course which incorporates the “Rights issue” in any shape or form will understrand 2 things:
1) That human rights is a farce.
2) Human rights is a farce.
Human rights is always used as a defence against anything. A murderer will plead that his human right to “quiet enjoyment of life”, “The right to life” etc.. had been infringed, after ironically he had deprived a person of THEIR RIGHT TO LIFE and their families from having a QUIET ENJOYMENT OF LIFE. YES! How absolutely absurd is that.
I would like to conclude that I see whatever freedom we have as a choice, not a right, a privilege not an absolute permit to do it cause we can. The only rights i believe we should have are, the right to privacy, and the right to be kept away from morons.

My friend just wrote an essay for her class. Also about human rights. she pointed out that human rights however noble the intention is defined according to the standards of a small group of countries, who expect the whole world to adhere to THEIR standard. They neglect to consider the different cultures and practices of other countries. She said if there has to be human rights, let it be agreed by every country and not big countries impose on small countries. She also pointed out that human rights have been used to abuse other small countries, such as the invasions by UN, under the banner of human rights.
You are absolutely right which is why i believe that it should be and only be a privilege. I believe only Children, until they attain say the age of 15, Animals and plants should have absolute rights, other than that human rights are grossly overrated and abused.
Thank you for your insight Yvonne.
